M: Mary, I didn’t know you can play the piano. Are your parents musical?

W: Well, my mum loves singing, but she can’t play any instruments. It was my dad who encouraged me more. He is a music teacher and used to give me lessons.

M: So you started to play the piano at an early age?

W: Yes. When I was 11, I went to a music school instead of an ordinary school. While other children were listening to popular music, I was practising Beethoven and Mozart. At my school, I made some lovely friends and we all had similar tastes.

（1） 学生问：Why didn’t you follow/take up a career in music?

录音答：My parents told me I should go to university and continue my music studies, but at 17, I decided I wanted to leave school and find a job. For some unknown reason, I started to develop an interest in gardening and took that up as a career.

（2）学生问：Do you still play the piano now?

录音答：Of course. I have my own piano at home, which gets used a lot. Also, many of my customers have pianos and they always ask me to play something for them after I finish the gardening. I sometimes have to insist on leaving as I have another appointment to go to.   

（3）学生问：What about your children?

录音答：I have a ten-year-old daughter. She’s learning to play the piano too, but it’s not something I push her to do. I would like to give her more chance to tell us what she wants when she goes to secondary school.

学生答： He is a music teacher.

（2） 录音问：What kind of school did Mary attend when she was 11?  

学生答：A music school.

（3）录音问：What career did Mary decide to get into?

学生答：Gardening.

学生答：Many of her customers.

学生答：Ten years old.

PART C

The Night That Changed Tom

When Tom was at the boarding school, he was addicted to the Internet. 

Every night, he would climb over the wall and go to the internet bar. 

One night, when Tom climbed over the wall, his dad saw him and gave him a beating. 

Tom was from another town and his dad came to the school to pay his school fees that day. 

During the night, his dad didn’t want to pay for a hotel room. 

So he sat under the wall all night. 

Soon after, Tom’s dad regretted what he did and apologized to Tom. 

Then they had a heart-to-heart conversation. 

Tom reflected on his actions and realized how hard his dad worked to pay for his education. 

It was a turning point in Tom’s life, and he decided to turn his life around. 

Since then, he started to study hard to make up for the lost time. 

He soon became one of the top students in his class. 

Finally, Tom went to a good college.
