Reading, writing, and...texting. Some English teachers say they're seeing symbols and abbreviations show-up in their students' essays.
In this 5NEWS special report, Jared Broyles looks at why educators say texting is to blame and how they're creatively combating it.
"I don't capitalize any of my words unless my phone does it, and I spell out most of them but occasionally I just shorthand 'em," Cheyanne, a high school student told 5NEWS.
Texting could be considered the Wild West of writing. That's because there are no grammatical laws to abide by. Cedarville High School English teacher Amber Wooden says it's showing up in student's essays.
"They take vowels out of words because that's what they are used to doing," Mrs. Wooden explained. "They don't capitalize words they don't punctuate sentences. They just add extra spaces at the end. They use abbreviations."
She mostly sees it in their handwritten work. That's because computer programs like word automatically correct many of their mistakes. So teachers like her are getting creative when it comes to winning the war on writing.
UA Fort Smith professor Dr. Keith Fudge: "I used to say things like you can't teach like you did 10 years ago. Now you can't teach like you did last week."
"I asked them to write a paper using nothing but text language," Mrs. Wooden said. "They started noticing it was much harder to write in text when they were told to. So it leads me to think that they're not doing it intentionally. It's just what they're so used to."
