Texting's Terrible Impact on Students' Writing

    Ms. Wooden says she sees texting in the student's writing frequently, but do they know what they're doing?

    "I was reading back over my essay, and like I didn't catch myself but like instead of saying 'the' with an 'e', I put it with an 'a' because I do that in texting," Lindsey, a high school junior told us.

    "I might put 'u' on accident once or twice, but I've usually caught myself and changed it back," Jordan, a sophomore said.

    Michael, another student, said "Every time I write the word 'were' it's 'w-e-r'…every time, and I don't even realize it until I get the paper back and I'm like, 'Wow'."

    Dr. Fudge says he has yet to see it in the college classroom but believes it's all about communicating what's appropriate.

    "I think teaching the students the context in which you write and how you write is the issue," Dr. Fudge said.

    The professor says it's all about learning to live with it. "Texting is not going to go away so how do we figure out ways to incorporate texting and good writing skills."

    Dr. Fudge says the positive thing is students are writing more than ever before--even if it's just in casual conversation. Ms. Wooden points out that texting isn't the only thing affecting writing: Facebook, Myspace, blogs and even Instant Messenger are also factors.
