The medicine is tasting bitter.

正:The medicine tastes bitter.

误:I was seeing a car passing by our house.

正:I saw a car passing by our house.

误:This cake is smelling wonderful.

正:This cake smells wonderful.

误:He is hearing much better after an operation.

正:He hears much better after an operation.

She was smelling scent at one counter while I was buying some medicine at another.

I smell something burning in the kitchen.

◇ I shall be hearing some new applications for the choir this afternoon.

◇ How are you feeling now?

◇He is seeing a client at 2:30.

二、表示某种情感或精神状态的动词:如believe, doubt, feel (= have an opinion), hate, image, know, (dis)like, love, prefer, realize, appreciate, recognize, remember, see (= understand), suppose, think (= have an opinion), understand, want, wish等。如:

误:I’m feeling it necessary to tell her about it.

正:I feel it necessary to tell her about it.

I am appreciating your help very much.

正:I appreciate your help very much.

I am thinking this is their house, but I’m not sure.

正:I think this is their house, but I’m not sure.

The service in the restaurant is terrible.

—I’m quite agreeing.

The service in the restaurant is terrible.

— I quite agree.

误:It was surprising me that such a little boy of seven could play the piano so well.

正:It surprised me that such a little boy of seven could play the piano so well.

四、表示所属、类似、构成等关系的动词,如:be, belong, concern, consist, contain, depend, deserve, fit, include, involve, lack, matter, measure (= have length etc.), need, owe, own, possess, weigh (= have weight)。

误:Some of the stamps are belonging to me, while the rest are his and hers.

正:Some of the stamps belong to me, while the rest are his and hers.

误:He’s a responsible writer, and he is deserving to be respected.

正:He’s a responsible writer, and he deserves to be respected.

误:The room is measuring 10 meters across.

正:The room measures 10 meters across.
